"Join the Great Jewish Conversation of the Ages" |
|
The scholars at Hebrew University who designed the Melton curriculum have broken the study of Judaism into four areas: 1) Purposes of Jewish Living -- Why do Jews believe and behave as they do? How do Jews answer fundamental questions of life? This course presents the ideas, concepts and beliefs across the Jewish spectrum. Year One 2) Rhythms of Jewish Living -- What is meant by the phrase "living a Jewish life?" This course explores Jewish practices and observances, from lifecycle events, through the calendar, through the rhythms within a Jewish household: kashrut, mikveh, blessings, etc. It is not a "how-to" class, but teaches the ideas behind the observances. Year One 3) Ethics of Jewish Living -- We are faced with myriad ethical dilemmas, from animal experimentation to end of life issues, from how to show respect to our parents to environmental issues. What do Jewish thinkers -- from our ancient sages to today's commentators -- tell us about conducting ourselves in public and private? Year Two 4) Dramas of Jewish Living -- What are the lessons of Jewish history? How do the turning points in Jewish history influence our lives today? The comprehensive history course starts from th earliest wanderings of Abraham to the turmoil in Israel today.
